using headset with walkie talkies?

I've got two different kinds of walkie talkie, both with 2.5mm 'accessory' headset jacks .

I then bought a 2.5mm plantronics headset which apparently worked with walkie talkies, when it's plugged in on both walkie talkies the mic works and sends to the other walkie talkie but no audio. No menu's work when the headsets are plugged in. Any ideas?

Most walkie talkies have two jacks on them. The 2.5mm is for the microphone only and the 3.5mm is for the headphones. Radio Shack used to sell a PTT radio Interface Module that would do the trick. You could plug in a cordless phone type headset that uses a stereo 2.5mm plug into it, and the box had a PTT button to make the walkie talkie transmit and you could use a VOX module that would sense when you were talking and make it transmit then, and the output was a 2.5mm plug and a 3.5mm plug. It's a shame they don't make this anymore as they seem to be really quite hard to find for cheap!
