Whats the longest most scientific explanation for why the sky is blue?
I know it has to do with light and reflection and all. Just ant to remember it because its wierd people keep asking me.
If you just want to remember the reason, then you have no need for the 'longest most scientific' explanation.
However, this should satisfy your weird friends and you won't need an advanced degree to follow along... I hope.
Sunlight is electromagnetic energy. Sunlight has every color in it. These colors travel in waves and each one has a different wavelength. This sunlight hits air molecules when it reaches the earth. The radius of an air molecule is smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic energy which we call light. The molecule then absorbs some of the energy of the light wave and re-emits it in all directions. This is called "scattering" Becuase the radius of the air molecule is smaller than the wavelength of the light, it is "scattered" by Rayleigh Scattering. The wavelength of light which is scattered most effeciently by the gases comprising our atmosphere is BLUE. So our eye receives more blue light from the atmosphere than any other color. Ergo - the sky is blue.
